Corrections Policy
Precision is the courtesy this publication owes its readers. We check names, dates, figures, quotations, attributions, carat weights, origins, treatments and auction results before publication, and every article carries its sources. When an error reaches the page despite that, we correct it openly and we keep a record of the correction on the article itself.
How to report an error
Use our contact page and mark your message CORRECTION in the subject line. Tell us which article the error appears in, what is wrong, what the correct information is, and where it can be verified. Reports from readers, houses, designers, collectors, auction houses and the trade receive the same attention.
What we correct
We correct substantive factual errors: wrong names, dates, places, figures, quotations, attributions, gemological descriptions and materially misleading auction reporting. The article is corrected promptly, and a dated correction note is added at the foot of the article describing what changed. Minor typographical errors are fixed without a note.
What a correction does not do
A correction sets the record straight; it does not renegotiate an article's judgment. If new information materially changes a story, we update the article and note the update with its date. If a story's foundations prove unsound, we retract it with an explanation rather than quietly editing it away.
