Montecristo Fragata: Habanos' New Travel-Retail Exclusive, Unveiled at Cannes
A 140mm x 54 Duke vitola, the first time the format has carried the Montecristo blend, arrives in 20-count travel humidors for duty-free and travel retail only.
The annual ritual of the TFWA World Exhibition and Conference ended the way it always ends: with Habanos S.A. unveiling one new cigar for the duty-free world. This year the reveal came on the evening of September 29, at a gala during the Cannes fair, which ran September 27 to October 1. The cigar is the Montecristo Fragata, and it is the third in a sequence of travel-retail exclusives that began with the Cohiba Vistosos in 2024 and continued with the Partagas Royales in 2025. Habanos has turned the Cannes unveiling into a tradition, and the Fragata is this year's installment.
This is a cigar you buy in an airport lounge or you do not buy it at all.
The cigar itself is a robusto extra measuring five and a half inches, 140 millimeters, by 54 ring gauge. In the Habanos factory naming system the format is called Duke. It is the exact size of the Partagas Serie E No.2, but it is the first time the vitola has been used for the Montecristo blend. The strength is described as medium to full.

A humidor that travels
The presentation is part of the pitch. The Fragata is offered in boxes of 20 that Habanos markets as travel humidors, each fitted with a humidifier and a hygrometer. The intended customer is the traveler who buys in the airport and wants the box to protect the cigars on the journey home. It is packaging as promise: these cigars are meant to move.
The price of the privilege
Pricing tells its own story. France's official tobacco publication listed one figure, but after the story was published a Habanos spokesperson told halfwheel the suggested retail price is expected to be around $1,300 per box. The company's own release put the recommended price at 55 euros per cigar, roughly $64, and about 1,100 euros per box, roughly $1,280. However the arithmetic lands at the counter, the Fragata is priced as a luxury object rather than a daily smoke, and the gap between the published figure and the expected retail says something about how Habanos manages its most exclusive releases.
The two-price story is worth a pause. France's official tobacco publication and Habanos' own guidance do not agree, and the spokesperson's revision upward suggests the company is still calibrating where a Montecristo Duke should sit. In the Habanos system, new vitolas for flagship marcas are priced by precedent and by aura in roughly equal measure, and a twenty-year travel-retail program gives Habanos deep experience with what the traveling smoker will pay. The $1,300 expectation is the number to watch when the boxes actually land.
No release date has been announced. The cigars will be sold only through duty-free and travel retail, which narrows the audience by design. American smokers will not see the Fragata in their local shops: Habanos cigars are not sold in the United States under the embargo, and the travel-retail exclusivity narrows the field further. This is a cigar you buy in an airport lounge or you do not buy it at all.
Twenty years of airport exclusives
We have now been marketing exclusive products for the Duty Free and Travel Retail channels for 20 years, with nearly 20 offerings designed especially for travellers who are Habanos aficionados, said Jose Maria Lopez, the vice president of Habanos S.A., in the company's release. Montecristo Fragata continues that legacy with a product that combines the excellence and craftsmanship of Habanos with the character of one of our most renowned brands. Having celebrated its 90th anniversary, Montecristo once again demonstrates its ability to continue surprising aficionados, generation after generation, now with a product specifically designed to accompany them on their travels.
The anniversary is the context the company wants. Montecristo remains the most recognized name in the Habanos portfolio, and a new vitola for the line is an event in itself, even before the duty-free theater. The travel-retail sequence has become Habanos' most reliable annual story: one new cigar, one Cannes evening, one more reason for the traveling smoker to walk past the perfume counters and stop at the tobacco case.
